RTA vehicle ferry operation information
The RTA operates the following vehicle ferries on rivers and waterways in metropolitan Sydney and regional NSW. There is no charge for using the ferries. Hawkesbury region: Sackville ferry – (UBD reference 50, G5 to F4) 24 hours, 7 days a week (closed for maintenance on the first Wednesday of each month from 12.45pm to 3.15pm)
The Sackville ferry crosses the Hawkesbury River, north of Sackville on the Sackville Road and connects the roads linking Windsor and Wisemans Ferry. The trip takes approximately 3 minutes.
Webbs Creek ferry – (UBD reference 52, J 11 to K 11) 24 hours, 7 days a week (closed for maintenance on the first Tuesday of each month from 9.30am to 12 noon)
The Webbs Creek ferry at Wisemans Ferry crosses the Hawkesbury River just south of the junction of the Macdonald River. The trip takes approximately 5 minutes.
Wisemans Ferry crossing – (UBD reference 52, L19) 24 hours, 7 days a week (There is no interruption to service during maintenance periods as two ferries are available at this crossing.)
The Wisemans ferry crosses the Hawkesbury River just east of the junction of the Macdonald River at the village of Wisemans Ferry. Bushwalkers wanting to trek up Devine's Hill and the Great North Road should use this crossing. The trip takes approximately 4 minutes.
Berowra ferry – (UBD reference 93, Q3 to 94 A3) 24 hours, 7 days a week (closed for maintenance on the second Tuesday of each month from noon to 2.30pm)
The Berowra ferry crosses Berowra Creek at Berowra Waters from Bay Road (Tourist Drive 11) to Berowra Waters Road. The trip takes approximately 3 minutes.
Parramatta River: Mortlake ferry – (UBD reference 213, L12 to M11)
Monday - Friday (excluding public holidays)
Leaving Mortlake: 6.45am continuously until 9.25am 2.45pm continuously until 6.15pm
Leaving Putney 6.55am continuously until 9.35am 2.55pm continuously until 6.25pm Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays
Leaving Mortlake 10.30am then every half hour until 12.30pm 1.05pm, 1.30pm then every half hour until 5.30pm (last service)
Leaving Putney 10.45am then every half hour until 12.15pm, 12.35pm 1.15pm then every half hour until 5.15pm, 5.35pm (last service)
Commonly known to locals as the Putney punt the Mortlake ferry began operating in 1925 and is the only remaining punt in the Sydney metropolitan area. It crosses the Parramatta River from Hilly Street, Mortlake to Pellisier road, Putney. The trip takes approximately 5 minutes.
Murray River: Speewa ferry Monday, Wednesday and Thursday: 7.00am - noon, 1.00pm – 6.30pm, 7.30pm – 9.00pm Tuesday: 7.00am - noon, 1.00pm – 6.30pm, 7.30pm – 10.00pm Friday: 7.00am - noon, 1.00pm – 6.30pm, 7.30pm – midnight Saturday: 7.30am - noon, 12.30pm – 6.30pm, 7.30pm – midnight Sunday: 8.00am - noon, 1.00pm – 6.30pm, 7.30pm – 9.00pm - Weight of loaded vehicle on Ferry not to exceed 8 tonne.
- Heavy loads exceeding 5 tonne gross, teams, machinery, etc cannot cross in daylight and cannot cross on weekends.
- Last ferry leaves NSW bank 15 minutes prior to finish of each shift.
- Last ferry leaves Victorian bank 10 minutes prior to finish of each shift.
The Speewa ferry crosses the Murray River approximately 20km north of Swan Hill on an unclassified road between Swan Hill and Nyah. It is a two-car ferry. Wymah ferry Seven days a week September to April: 6.00am – 7.15 am, 8.00am – 11.45am, 1.00pm – 5.15pm, 6.30pm – 9.00pm May to August:7.00am – 7.15 am, 8.00am – 11.45am, 1.00pm – 5.15pm, 6.00pm – 8.00pm
The Wymah ferry croses the Murray River approximately 35km east of Albury at Wymah (NSW) / Granya (Vic).
Clarence River: Lawrence ferry 24 hours, 7 days a week (stops for maintenance every Tuesday from 9.30am to 11am)
The Lawrence ferry crossing the Clarence River at Rutland Street, Lawrence this ferry shuttles between Lawrence and Woodford Island and is part of Tourist Drive 22. Vehicles with long overhang will have problems at low tide.
