Travel demand management

Travel demand management
The NSW Government promotes active living. This includes helping employers and workers with healthy travel options that can save money for an organisation, benefit its employees and result in a more productive and efficient business.

Active workplace travel options can include:

  • Walking
  • Cycling
  • Public transport
  • Teleworking
  • Flexible working hours

Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) assists by implementing initiatives that support active transport (walking, cycling and public transport) and reduce travel during peak times (flexible working hours and teleworking).

Walking

Walking to and from work costs nothing, results in better health, reduces sick days and improves productivity.

Cycling

Cycling improves health and fitness and is environmentally friendly, affordable and fun.

Public transport

Catching public transport reduces congestion and vehicle emissions, gives time to relax on the journey and includes a walk at either end of the trip.

Teleworking

Teleworking improves employees’ work-life balance, reduces or eliminates commuting and travel costs and increases productivity.

Flexible working hours

Flexible working hours let employees start a day’s work earlier, reduce congestion and give more time at the end of the day to do physical activity.

Car pooling

Sharing the car commute reduces travel costs, manages congestion and makes the most of limited employee parking

Workplace Travel Plans

A Workplace Travel Plan spells out the actions a workplace will take to support active travel - a great way to show leadership and care for staff well-being.

Transport access guides

Transport access guides (TAGs) provide customised travel information for people travelling to and from a particular site or venue using a number of different forms of active transport - walking, cycling and public transport.  Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) encourages and supports organisations to develop their own transport access guides.
