RTA and active transport

RTA and active transport

The RTA is responsible for managing the use of the road network to achieve consistent travel times, particularly during peak periods, by reducing road congestion and delays and helping the community use the road network more effectively.  The challenges facing the RTA include working to enhance the road network and looking for opportunities that moderate traffic growth while meeting road user expectations.  This includes encouraging people to use cars less frequently and increase the usage of public transport, bicycles, walking and teleworking.

The RTA has conducted an active transport trial using its own staff when 500 staff members relocated from offices in metropolitan Sydney to offices in Parramatta.  The trial focused on supporting staff in making their travel arrangements to the new offices by providing transport and travel information.  Each staff member was given a traveller information kit that included information on how to access the RTA Parramatta office using sustainable transport modes (walking, cycling and public transport).  A key document in the kit was the RTA transport access guide.

Surveys were used before and after the move to see if there were changes in the mode of transport used to travel to work.  The results of this survey indicated a 17 per cent modal shift from car use to use of sustainable modes of transport (walking, bicycles and public transport).  The surveys also found that staff cited the RTA transport access guide as the most useful source of transport information.
