Active transport is emerging internationally as an effective method of moderating the growth of car use. Road based transportation is one of the main sources of carbon emissions in Australia, making sustainable, active transport initiatives essential.
The RTA supports active transport management principles through the RTA Strategic Plan, ‘Blueprint’, to moderate the growth of traffic by encouraging people to reduce car use, as well as maximising the capacity of the existing road network in a way that balances the needs of public transport passengers, bicycle riders and motorcyclists, pedestrians, motorists and commercial operators.
Actions to encourage people to change their travel patterns and reduce their car usage include:
- Promoting active modes: cycling, walking and public transport.
- Informing people about available public transport, safe cycling and walking routes specific to their needs.
- Providing secure bicycle parking, showers and lockers and encouraging car pooling and teleworking arrangements.
- Identifying opportunities to improve existing facilities and services for bicycles and car pool vehicles and supporting behavioural change.
The benefits of managing travel demand include reduced car use, reduced traffic congestion, reduced pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, improved health and safety, regional development and social equity.
