Traffic light tips

Cars stop at traffic lights

Don’t drive through yellow lights

If the lights ahead go yellow, stop if safely possible. Driving through a yellow light is not only dangerous, it won’t get you far. You will probably be stopped by a red light at the next intersection.

Stop just before the white stop line

If you stop more than 5 metres before, or if you creep past the line, the signals may not be aware of your presence and you may not get a green light.

On minor roads and right turn lanes

Stay with the main group of vehicles. SCATS may take a large gap to mean the end of the stream of traffic and end the green light.

Entering a main road from a side street

After entering a main road from a side street you will often get a red light at the next intersection. However, you will then be positioned at or near the head of the next group of vehicles.
