Sydney Harbour Tunnel cashless tolling FAQs

Sydney Harbour Tunnel became cashless on 8 July 2007

The Sydney Harbour Tunnel moved to fully electronic tolling on Sunday 8 July 2007.

With more than 80 per cent of peak hour motorists already using tags through the harbour tunnel, the time was right for the Sydney Harbour Tunnel to move to a cashless system.

The traffic flow benefits of electronic tolling are significant and the opening of the Lane Cove Tunnel has made it more important than ever to reduce congestion on the approaches to the harbour crossings, and on the crossings themselves.

From Sunday 8 July 2007, motorists need an electronic tag or an E-Toll pass to use the Sydney Harbour Tunnel. If you're still paying cash for the toll, order an RTA E-Toll tag or pass online at myE-Toll

Additional fees apply for pass users. Click here for more information about the RTA E-Toll pass.

Please note: motorists will still have the option of using cash on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and can still access the Eastern Distributor (and Sydney airport) by using the Cahill Expressway (the far left lane on the Sydney Harbour Bridge).

However, we strongly recommend that motorists wishing to use the harbour crossings get a tag. With no stopping to pay a toll, traffic flows better in the E lanes. Too many cash paying motorists using the Cahill Expressway will cause heavy congestion.
