Cashless tolling allows motorists to experience quicker travel times by avoiding toll booths as well as traffic lights – reducing traffic congestion, fuel consumption and vehicle wear and tear. The Cross City Tunnel, Sydney Harbour Tunnel, Westlink M7 and Lane Cove Tunnel are fully electronic.
There are no toll booths on fully electronic motorways. This means there are no points along the road where you can stop to pay cash. Instead, you pay for your toll with an electronic tag or a pass.
Approaching fully electronic toll roads
As you approach the entrance to a fully electronic motorway, you will see both 'E' and 'e' symbols on road signs and markings (image at left).
Signs with these symbols mean payment for the toll ahead can only be made with a tag or pass.
How cashless tolling works
Gantries are installed at toll collection points on fully electronic motorways. Tag sensors and cameras are mounted on these gantries to record electronic tags and number plate details as vehicles pass.
The cameras photograph all vehicles using the road. If your vehicle has an electronic tag, the details of the trip are recorded and billed to your account.
The number plate details of vehicles without tags are matched against existing pass accounts. Details of vehicles not matching existing records are held until payment for the toll is received.
If payment is not arranged within 48 hours a toll violation notice is mailed to the registered operator of the vehicle.
