Electronic tolling Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I get a tag?

Electronic tags make it easy for you to use Sydney’s motorways as all of the motorways accept tags for toll payment. With a tag you don’t need to stop to pay your toll and there’s no need to make sure you have change. Some motorways are fully electronic so you’ll need either a tag or a pass to use them.

Where do I get a tag?

You can apply for an RTA E-Toll account:

  • Online: Set up your E-Toll account online at myE-Toll.
  • By post: Download and complete the RTA E-Toll account application form from the box at the bottom of this page, then post it to the mailing address on the form.
  • In Person: Hand in your completed RTA E-Toll account application form at any RTA E-Toll Motor Registry. To collect your RTA E-Toll tag(s) on the spot, hand it in to any of the 42 RTA E-Toll motor registries.
  • By phone: Call 131 865 to speak with a customer service officer.

Tags are also available from the following toll providers:

Where do I get a pass?

Passes are available from the following toll providers:

How much does a pass cost?

The cost of the pass includes the toll and any applicable setup and administration fees. You need to contact the relevant toll provider for more details.

What’s the difference between a tag and a pass?

A tag is an electronic device that you attach to the inside of your vehicle’s windscreen. All tags work on all motorways in Australia. Different tag products are available from each toll provider, all with different setup and running costs. When you travel past a toll point sensors detect the tag and the toll is charged to your toll account. There are no administration charges when you use a tag.

A pass is an arrangement between you and a toll provider for a period of time. You provide your details to the toll provider and they will charge the toll and any applicable setup and administration fees to your credit card or bank account. There may be additional charges for using a pass. You need to contact the relevant toll provider for more details.
What happens if I use a motorway without a tag or a pass?

Your vehicle will be photographed and number plate details recorded. A Toll Notice will then be sent to the registered address of the vehicle. The Toll Notice has an administration charge (normally $10) in addition to the toll.

Do I have to pay the toll?

Motorists are required by law to pay the toll when they drive on a toll road.  The fine for not paying a toll exceeds $140.
