Major incident - what to do

The advice you receive will depend on the stage you are at in your F3 journey:

At home or at work - Stop

You’re still at home or work and haven’t started your journey:

  1. Stay away. Avoid the F3.
  2. Review the situation via radio, television updates or the Live Traffic NSW website .
  3. Consider using public transport.
On the road - turn around

You are on the road, but not yet at the incident site:

  1. Stay away – turn around and go back as soon as you can
  2. Listen to the radio for further updates
  3. Consider using public transport.
  4. Check Variable Message Signs for instructions.

At the incident site - follow instructions

If you are in the traffic at an incident site.

  1. Stay in your vehicle, within your traffic lane
  2. Keep breakdown lane free for emergency vehicles, unless you have broken down
  3. Follow directions from authorities (Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) and Police) on site:
    1. You may be instructed to take a detour. If so, follow the ‘D’ and ‘D1’ signs from the freeway, along the detour route and back onto the freeway.
    2. A contra flow traffic management plan may be put in place, so:
      • Follow directions from authorities on site
      • Obey the reduced speed limit
      • Listen to the radio for further updates.
