Frequently Asked Questions for bus lane cameras

What are bus lane cameras?

Bus lane cameras are digital cameras installed in some bus lanes to assist with enforcing the legal use of bus lanes in NSW.

Who can use a bus lane?

Buses, taxis, hire cars, motorcycles and bicycles can all use bus lanes. Drivers of all vehicles can also use a bus lane for up to 100 metres if they are turning into or from a side street or property.

Can I use a bus lane to turn left?

Yes, drivers of all vehicles can use a bus lane for up to 100 metres to turn into or from a side street or property.

How do bus lane cameras work?

Bus lane cameras are installed beside a bus lane and are mounted more than 100 metres apart. The digital cameras can read the number plate of all vehicles travelling in these lanes. If both cameras detect the same number plate within an expected time period and the vehicle is not authorised to be in the lane, a potential infringement is generated.

The cameras take two photos each - a wide-angle shot to put the situation in context and another of the vehicle’s number plate. Images of exempt vehicles such as buses, taxis and motorcycles will be removed during the process.

Are the camera sites signposted?

Yes, there are two signs before the camera and one between the cameras on the bus lanes. Entrances to T-ways are also signposted.

Why are buses so important?

Buses on Sydney’s roads make a significant contribution to travel and transport. An example is the bus lane on the Sydney Harbour Bridge which transports more people to the city in the morning peak than all of the other city bound lanes combined.

What if I get an infringement notice and it wasn't me driving the car?

You can complete the statutory declaration included in your Traffic Infringement Notice and return it to the Infringement Processing Bureau.

Will the NSW police still be able to issue a fine for illegally using a bus lane?

Yes, the cameras are intended to assist the Police with their enforcement.
