Improving the NSW bike network

The RTA is committed to making provisions for bicycles in all new major road infrastructure and maintenance work.  This is in line with the NSW Government State Plan which is dedicated to decreasing car dependence and improving the environment in NSW.

In recognition of the fact that most cycling takes place on local roads, the RTA offers joint funding to NSW Councils for the development and implementation of their local bicycle networks.  During 2007/08 more than $3.8 million has been allocated to fund local cycleway work 50/50 within 78 Council areas.  93 local bicycle network projects are being funded at a combined cost of $7.7 million.

The overall length of cycleway to be delivered by a total RTA funding allocation of $15.1 million is more than 134 kilometres – 80 kilometres of on-road and 54 kilometres of off-road cycleway.

The specific RTA bicycle program is also funding the development and construction of other major cycleway projects during the 2007/08 financial year, including:

  • Chatswood to North Sydney- design development of the section of route between Merrenburn Avenue, Naremburn Chatswood and the Ridge Street Bridge, North Sydney.
  • Princes Highway, Lake Tabourie - construction of a shared use bridge, over Tabourie Creek, along the eastern side of the existing Princes Highway Bridge, Lake Tabourie.
  • Princes Highway, Minnamurra - construction of a shared use path along the north eastern side of the existing Princes Highway, including a bridge over the Minnamurra River, from 110 metres northwest of the Minamurra River to The Village, Minnamurra.
  • Main Road 522 upgrade – upgrade of Drainage Grates along MR522 - Shellharbour Road, Windang Road, Primbee Deviation and King Street, Shellharbour to Port Kembla.

The council projects are assisting in the delivery of 62 kilometres of on-road cycleway and 42 kilometres of off-road (shared use) path.
