Closed Circuit Television. The RTA's
Transport Management Centre uses a network of over

incidents.
Incident
Any event which causes a temporary
reduction in road capacity or an abnormal increase
in traffic demand.
Lane
Terminology
Traffic
incidents may effect 1 or more lanes on a roadway. The diagram
below explains the terminology used in identifying lanes affected
by traffic incidents.
SCATS
The Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic
System. SCATS is a computer-based system which controls and
co-ordinates signalised intersections. SCATS was developed by
the RTA and is currently in use in over 80 cities around the
world.
Special Event
The TMC supports on-road special events
while minimising disruptions to road users by ensuring that appropriate
traffic management arrangements are in place. Details about forthcoming
Special Events can be found by clicking on
Traffic and Transport for Special Events.
Tidal Flow
A system which optimises the flow of
traffic along a roadway by increasing the number
of lanes available in the direction which carries
more traffic. The best known example is the Sydney
Harbour Bridge, which adjusts the direction of
travel of its 8 lanes according to traffic demand.
Traffic Commanders
RTA field staff who manage the traffic
arrangements around an incident scene and return
the road to normal operating conditions.
Traffic Emergency
Patrols
RTA field staff who patrol designated
routes around the Sydney region with the role of
responding to unplanned incidents with the aim of
returning the road to normal operating conditions.
Each patrol vehicle is equipped with an extensive
array of traffic control equipment.

A purpose-built RTA facility, which manages
the NSW road network. The TMC monitors and manages traffic 24 hours a day,
7 days a week through the use of advanced technologies and systems. Click
here for more information about the
Transport Management Centre.
VMS
60 permanent Variable Message Signs

the immediate area. When they are not being used
for this purpose, they are utilised to display
standby road safety and traffic management
messages.

(TMC's) Traffic Incident Reporting Line. Motorists
are encouraged to ring 131700 to report traffic
incidents to the TMC.
