The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) proposed a new regulation that would require vehicles with four wheel drive transmission systems to be fitted with winter tyres or to carry and fit snow chains when directed. It was proposed for the regulation to apply on designated snow and ice risk sections in the Alpine Region between the June and October long weekends and to include large off-road vehicles, sports utility vehicles and all wheel drive vehicles.
Involving the community
A discussion paper was distributed for community feedback in September 2008 and was the basis for a state-wide consultation to seek community views on the proposed new regulation.
The submission period on this issue closed on 1 March 2009.
Current position – July 2009
Following widespread community consultation and views put to the RTA from Monaro MP Hon Steve Whan, residents, businesses and users of the ski-fields, Premier Nathan Rees has announced that there will be no change to the current laws relating to the use of snow chains in the Snowy Mountains.
