Motorcycle penalties

Demerit point information is a guide only and is subject to change at any time without notice.

The 2001 Road Safety Task Force recommended increased penalties for non-use of helmets. These recommendations have been adopted to improve road safety and reduce the road toll.

The adopted recommendations include higher fines and over long weekends, double demerit points. Details are listed below.

For further information please contact the RTA Customer Call Centre on 132 213.

In NSW, riders of motorcycles, and any passengers, must wear approved motorcycle helmets. There are no exceptions.
