Wear a Helmet! (it's the law)

All cyclists are required by law to wear an approved bicycle helmet. The Police will fine cyclists who ride without an approved helmet.

Where you can ride

Adults riding a bicycle must ride on the road and obey all traffic signals and signs.

Children under twelve years of age can legally ride on the footpath. It is also legal for an accompanying adult who is supervising a child under 12 years old to ride on the footpath with that child.

Children aged between twelve and seventeen years may also legally ride on the footpath when under the supervision of an adult who is also supervising a child under 12 years.

Bicycle Routes

The RTA has established a network of bicycle routes around Sydney and in other parts of NSW. Some of the most popular routes are outlined in our bike maps which can be found under 'bicycles' in the 'traffic' section of our website.
