Fatalities per 100,000 population 1908 - 2003

The fatality rate per 100,000 population in NSW has declined dramatically over the last three decades (from 28.9 in 1970 to 8.1 in 2003).

The most recent figures are the lowest rates since the early years of last century with the only recorded figure lower occuring in 1908 (7.6 fatalities per 100,000 population). Yet in 2003 there were 27 times as many motor vehicles as in 1908.
