The Slow Down Pledge is an Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) initiative supported by Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) SpeedBlitz Blues, retired rugby league legend Hazem El Masri and Professor Brian Owler, Neurosurgeon, Westmead Hospitals. The Slow Down Pledge urges all drivers and passengers to take a pledge not to speed or to get in a vehicle with someone who speeds.
Speeding is the highest contributing factor to fatality crashes in NSW. In 2009 there were 453 fatalities on NSW roads, which was 79 more fatalities than in 2008. Analysis by Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) shows 46 percent of fatalities on NSW roads in 2009 involved speeding.
High-profile Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) SpeedBlitz Blues players Brett Lee, Nathan Bracken, Phillip Hughes, Stuart Clark, David Warner and Steven Smith, Hazem El Masri and Professor Brian Owler have all taken the pledge to raise awareness of the initiative.
Driving is something that most people take for granted, an accepted part of everyday life, but speeding and reckless driving – even when you think you are in control – can take that privilege away forever. Even worse, every time you speed, you are at risk of causing harm to yourself, your loved ones and others.
You can help change people’s attitudes towards speeding by joining thousands of others who have taken a stand against speeding by taking the Slow Down Pledge to not speed and to drive safely. By taking the pledge you are accepting responsibility for your actions on the road and encouraging others to do the same.
