RTA SpeedBlitz Expo a big hit with cricket fans
Thousands of young cricket fans learnt about the importance of road safety at the inaugural RTA SpeedBlitz Expo at ANZ Stadium at Olympic Park on Monday 12 January.
Held on the stadium concourse the expo provided plenty of fun and excitement for the kids as they headed to the Twenty20 match between the RTA SpeedBlitz Blues and the Tasmanian Tigers.
The stadium was full of enthusiastic blue zinc faced fans wearing RTA SpeedBlitz Blues helmets as they lined up to take part in a number of interactive road safety activities.
One of the most popular events was the bouncing ball competition where kids were required to test their skills by bouncing a ball repeatedly on the end of a small cricket bat.
The aim of this activity was to prove to the competitor that if you bounce the ball slowly you will actually have more control, just as you will when you are driving a vehicle.
The cricket fans also learnt about slowing down and taking control in the cricket nets.
Everyone was given two opportunities to have a bowl – one at high speed and the next one at a slower speed - to show that speeding is not the way to go.
Meanwhile, the L Trent Simulator gave the kids an opportunity to get behind the wheel to learn about stopping distances and test hazard perception.
There was a chance to wave a pinkie and capture the moment on camera with cut outs of the ‘Pinkie’ campaign which features the RTA SpeedBlitz Blues cricketers.
Another key feature of the expo was a graphic display of two identical cars that were crashed at different speeds – one at 100kmh and the other at 60kmh – to illustrate what happens to a vehicle during a high speed crash.
Members of the public were also able to watch the RTA road safety video which features RTA Road Safety Ambassador Michelle Amess who lost her two sons in a high speed crash at Morpeth in 2005.
The video is aimed at educating the community about the dangers of speeding through the eyes of someone who has lost loved ones.
Finally the RTA SpeedBlitz Blues Expo provided kids with plenty of giveaways including showbags with water bottles, blue zinc, posters, stickers and foam cricket balls.
The event was so successful the RTA will take the expo to Newcastle at the end of the month.
Thank you to all the NSW cricket fans for taking part in the RTA SpeedBlitz Blues Expo.
Go the Blues!
