Speeding is the major cause of death and injury on our roads and contributing to over 40 per cent of fatal crashes involving young peopleĀ aged 17-25 years.
To reduce the death and injury of young people on our roads, the NSW Government has introduced a range of new initiatives.
From 1 July 2007,penalties for certain speeding offences for P1 drivers and provisional riders will change.
- Any P1 driver or provisional rider caught exceeding the speed limit by up to 30 km/h on or after 1 July 2007 will receive four demerit points and a fine. This will result in Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) imposing a three month licence suspension. If the driver goes to court a fine of up to $2,200 may be payable.
Current speeding offences:
- Any P1 driver or provisional rider caught exceeding the speed limit by more than 30 km/h will receive four demerit points. This will result in Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) imposing a six month licence suspension (3 months under the Demerit Point Scheme and 3 months under the Excessive Speed Scheme).
- Any P1 driver or provisional rider caught exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 km/h will receive six demerit points. This will result in Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) imposing a nine month licence suspension (3 months under the Demerit Point Scheme and 6 months under the Excessive Speed Scheme). The Police may impose the six month suspension immediately at the roadside.
Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) has developed a major advertising campaign onĀ P plate speeding to alert young people to the issue of speeding.
