Speeding - provisional drivers and riders

Speeding is the major cause of death and injury on our roads and contributing to over 40 per cent of fatal crashes involving young peopleĀ aged 17-25 years.

To reduce the death and injury of young people on our roads, the NSW Government has introduced a range of new initiatives.

From 1 July 2007,penalties for certain speeding offences for P1 drivers and provisional riders will change.

  • Any P1 driver or provisional rider caught exceeding the speed limit by up to 30 km/h on or after 1 July 2007 will receive four demerit points and a fine. This will result in Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) imposing a three month licence suspension. If the driver goes to court a fine of up to $2,200 may be payable.

Current speeding offences:

  • Any P1 driver or provisional rider caught exceeding the speed limit by more than 30 km/h will receive four demerit points. This will result in Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) imposing a six month licence suspension (3 months under the Demerit Point Scheme and 3 months under the Excessive Speed Scheme).
  • Any P1 driver or provisional rider caught exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 km/h will receive six demerit points. This will result in Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) imposing a nine month licence suspension (3 months under the Demerit Point Scheme and 6 months under the Excessive Speed Scheme). The Police may impose the six month suspension immediately at the roadside.

Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) has developed a major advertising campaign onĀ P plate speeding to alert young people to the issue of speeding.

So please slow down.
