Intelligent Speed Adaptation
Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) refers to advanced systems which assist drivers to adhere to the speed limit. By using GPS technology linked to a speed zone database, the vehicle “knows” where it is and what the speed limit is for that road. The ISA system informs the driver via visual and auditory feedback if they exceed the speed limit.
The NSW Intelligent Speed Adaptation Trial
The NSW Centre for Road Safety has recently completed a trial to examine the effectiveness of ISA devices in improving drivers’ compliance with speed limits, assess the road safety benefits of ISA, and determine driver acceptability. The NSW trial is the largest connected-vehicle trial ever held in Australia.
Over 100 vehicles from the Illawarra region including a mix of non-government private business fleets and private driver volunteers have participated in the trial. Vehicles were fitted with a data recorder which tracked their speed and location prior to, during and after the ISA technology was installed. 7.6 million speed data records were analysed by Centre for Road Safety researchers. Attitudinal and behavioural surveys were also conducted.
