What is ISA?
Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) is the generic name for systems where the vehicle ‘knows’ the speed limit and is capable of using that information to give feedback to the driver (advisory systems) or limit the vehicles’ speed (supportive systems).
How does it work?
A device fitted to the car and mounted on the dashboard alerts the driver to the speed limit of the road on which the vehicle is travelling, by taking bearings from satellites.
The device in the car refers to detailed maps of the surrounding road network in order to inform the driver, by means of an alert and flashing speed zone symbols, of the vehicles’ current speed and when the speed zone changes.
In supportive systems the vehicle can be gradually slowed down to the speed limit by reducing the quantity of fuel flowing to the engine.
What is the NSW ISA Trial?
The NSW trial by the NSW Centre for Road Safety will involve fitting 100 vehicles from private fleets in the Illawarra Region with an ISA device and a speed data recorder.
The project will run for 12-18 months and data recorded will form the basis of a report on the reliability and benefits such technology would give motorists in NSW.
The Illawarra region has been mapped in detail and run across three Local Government Areas including:
Wollongong City
Shellharbour City
Kiama Municipality
