Why a lower speed limit

Selection of roads for 40 km/h zoning

How are roads selected for 40 km/h zoning?

The 40 km/h speed limit are installed in areas of high pedestrian activity. Typically these are busy CBD areas as well as small suburban shopping strips.

Local councils will instigate most of the requests for 40 km/h pedestrian zones. However, the community, Police, and the RTA may also make requests for 40 km/h pedestrian zones.

All requests for 40 km/h pedestrian zones are referred to the Local Traffic Committee for review. The request is then submitted to the RTA with Council support.

The RTA may review the proposal taking into consideration the impact on adjoining classified roads.
