Recent vehicle models are fitted with retractable lap-sash seat belts in the centre rear seating position. They provide better protection than the lap-only belts normally fitted to this seating position.
Kits are available for replacing lap-only seat belts with retractable lap-sash seatbelts in the centre rear position of older vehicles.
Two types of kit are available:
- A Klippan specially designed and tested kit approved for a particular vehicle model. This kit includes an installation diagram and fittings contoured to the vehicle components.
- A general purpose Klippan kit which usually requires the manufacture of extra components for satisfactory installation.
The installation must be performed by an authorised RTA Safety Restraint Fitting Station, or be approved by a recognised engineering signatory.
Any seatbelt installation other than that provided by the vehicle manufacturer must be inspected and certified by an RTA-recognised engineering signatory.
The only exception is where a retro-fit kit approved for a specific vehicle is fitted by an RTA-approved restraint fitting station.
In this case an engineering statutory certificate is not required. The restraint station issues a certificate (which may also be a receipt) instead.
