Operation RoadSafe is a road safety initiative of Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) and the NSW Police. It also has the active involvement of local councils through their Road Safety Officers.
Operation RoadSafe targets the entire Sydney metropolitan area and focus on speeding, drink driving and non use of seatbelts.
The intense enforcement is supported by a high profile advertising campaign on radio, outdoor and in the press.
A Sydney-wide challenge
Since 2001, a series of high-profile enforcement operations have made a substantial contribution to lowering the road toll in Sydney. Operation RoadSafe combines the successes of these programs into a single Sydney-wide operation covering nearly 4 million people.
The strength of Operation RoadSafe is high profile enforcement of road rules supported by an advertising and community communications strategy to reduce road accidents across Sydney.
RoadSafe enforcement program
The intensive police enforcement for Operation RoadSafe is a cooperative effort across the Central Metro, North and South-West Metro Police regions.
Police target Sydney areas based on crash data supplied by Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) and local councils and matched to police crash data.
Using local intelligence, additional police target blackspots. Overall, the campaign involves up to 60 extra police.
Public awareness
Operation RoadSafe has demonstrated the importance of integrating police enforcement, advertising and media to deliver a strong road safety message. Local government also provides support through localised promotion of police operations.
Recent community surveys show more than 80 per cent support for major high profile road safety enforcement operations of this kind.
