Walking is a fundamental component of travel.
All road users are pedestrians at some time or other. Individual trips, whether by public or private transport, begin and end with a walk section and this is when people are at their most vulnerable. They depend on motor vehicle controllers and the availability of pedestrian facilities for protection .
Road safety initiatives to reduce pedestrian accidents include:
- The 50 km/h Urban Speed Limit initiative.
- The Safety Around Schools (SAS) Program.
- Targeted public education campaigns.
- Engineering treatments designed to increase the safety and amenity of pedestrians in high volume pedestrian areas such as shopping precincts
- The Sharing the Main streets program and local area traffic management (LATM).
However, pedestrian deaths still account for around 18% of the road toll.
This document defines the scope of the pedestrian accident problem and outlines countermeasures currently being implemented or researched in NSW to reduce the number and consequences of pedestrian accidents.
