Pedestrian crossing upgrade program

In May 2006 the NSW Minister for Roads announced the Pedestrian Crossing Upgrade Program.

This is a state-wide program to upgrade pedestrian crossings across multi-lane roads to improve pedestrian and motorist safety. This program is fully funded by the NSW State Government.

The Program involves the upgrade of 59 pedestrian crossings over three years at a cost of $17 million. The sites were selected following a safety audit of ‘zebra’ crossings on multi-lane State-Government roads.

Ten sites within the Sydney region have been identified for treatment during the 2006-2007 financial year. They are:

  •  McEvoy Street east of Pitt Street, Alexandria.
  •  Pittwater Road west of Mona Street, Bayview.
  •  Rainbow Street east of Anzac Parade, Randwick.
  •  Pacific Highway at Railway Station, Cowan.
  •  Great Western Highway at Railway Station, Blackheath.
  •  Wall Park Avenue, Seven Hills.
  •  Rocky Point Road north of Targo Road, Ramsgate.
  •  Pittwater Road south of Bungan and Park Streets, Mona Vale.
  •  Pacific Highway at Arthur Street, North Sydney.
  •  Anzac Parade at Matraville Sports High School, Matraville.

In most cases an existing ‘zebra’ crossing will be replaced with traffic lights and a signalised pedestrian crossing.

Community consultation is an important part of this project. The RTA is consulting with local residents, businesses and community organisations on each project.

Feedback on the program or individual projects is welcome. For further information or to provide feedback please contact:
