Bicycle safety

Bicycle riders are more vulnerable in traffic than are motor vehicle drivers. To improve safety on the road, it is important that cyclists ride in a defensive manner, constantly scanning the environment to be aware of what is happening. The RTA has produced Cycleways maps to help you select the best route for your journey.

To make it easier for other road users to see you, wear bright clothing during the day and retroflective clothing at night. If you have no retroflective gear for night riding, a plain white t-shirt is the next best thing. When riding at night, there must be a white light on the front of the bike and a red light and red reflector at the back of the bike. Both the lights and the reflector should be clearly visible to road users and not obstructed. See the AustralianĀ RoadĀ Rules for further information.

To assist in reaching your destination safely, make sure that your bicycle is well maintained.

Remember, it is law to always wear an Australian Standard approved helmet correctly whenever you ride.
