2008 Australian International Motor Show at Darling Harbour

The NSW Centre for Road Safety drove home the anti-speeding message at the 2008 Australian International Motor Show at Darling Harbour; held from 9 -19 October.

The RTA was one of the major sponsors of this years motorshow and the NSW Centre for Road Safety made its first appearance at the event.

The Australian International Motor Show was established in 1911 and is now one of the top ten motor shows in the world, with more than 240,000 people taking part every year.

Since the NSW Centre for Road Safety was established in May last year, it has been focusing on changing driver attitudes towards speeding to help reduce the death toll on NSW roads.

The NSW Centre for Road Safety has designed an innovative display for this years motorshow to educate drivers about the consequences of speeding.

Visitors were able to see exactly what happens during a high speed crash and how easy it is to lose control of a vehicle when speeding.

There was an Electronic Stability Control simulator that gave visitors a virtual ride in a vehicle to show them how  this technology can make vehicles safer.

The RTA SpeedBlitz Blues cricketers demonstrated their bowling skills on a nine metre cricket pitch to show how excessive speed, even on a cricket pitch, can result in a loss of control.

There were live demonstrations using crash test dummies to demonstrate various body impact zones in a crash.

There was also a graphic display of a car that was crashed at 100kmh to illustrate the horrifying consequences of crashing at high speed and what happens when an airbag is deployed.

Visitors learned about Intelligent Speed Adaptation technology, how it works and what it does to improve road safety.

There was also be a new road safety video featuring RTA Road Safety ambassador Michelle Amess who lost her two teenage sons in a high speed crash in Morpeth in 2005.

Visitors had an opportunity to share their own road safety message in a recording booth which will be used on a new community section of the RTA website.

Visitors to the stand could order personalised number plates, electronic tags and there was a road safety competition giving visitors an opportunity to win some great prizes including a fully catered hospitality box for six people at an upcoming cricket test, signed cricket bats, personalised plates, and electronic tag products.
