About Western region

Western region contains sweeping plains, rugged mountain ranges and experiences drought, locust plagues and flooding rains, snow and ice. Temperatures range from the very high in the far west to very low in the eastern part of the region.

  • Western region covers 431,964 square kilometres of NSW - 54 per cent.
  • Western region covers 28 local government areas.
  • 6,314 kilometres of State roads - managed and maintained by Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority). 
  • 2,978 kilometres of regional and local roads - managed and maintained by Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority).

 

Major highways in Western region

  • The Newell Highway (State Highway 17) is the longest highway in New South Wales, stretching over 1,060 kilometres from the Victorian border at Tocumwal to the Queensland border at Goondiwindi. It is a major freight route from Melbourne to Brisbane for heavy vehicles.

It is also a route for interstate travellers and tourists between Melbourne or Adelaide in the south to Brisbane in the north, as it is the most direct route.

  • The Great Western Highway (State Highway 5) is the main road link between Sydney and Lithgow and beyond to the central west of New South Wales. The highway serves as a key freight route between Sydney and the central west of NSW, including the timber industry in the Oberon area.

Heavy vehicles make up about 15 per cent of the traffic. It is also a tourist route with destinations including the Blue Mountains, historic Hartley, Jenolan Caves, Mudgee and Bathurst.

As Project Services Manager in Western Region he worked on many regional projects including Evans Bridge at Bathurst, Mt Lambie Deviation (Great Western Highway between Bathurst and Lithgow), Lidsdale Deviation (Castlereagh Highway north of Lithgow), Tycannah Bridges (Newell Highway north of Narrabri), Coobang Deviation (Newell Highway north of Parkes), Moree Bypass (Newell Highway bypass of Moree CBD), Mt Victoria to Lithgow (Great Western Highway Upgrade - Concept Development only).
