Thornton Bridge

Existing Thornton Bridge

New Thornton Bridge

Construction of the new two lane bridge over the Great Northern Railway line is underway.
Seymour Whyte Constructions has been contracted to construct the new bridge.

The $16 million project, fully funded by the NSW Government, is expected to open to traffic late 2012, weather permitting.

The project includes:

  • Constructing a new two-lane bridge immediately east of the existing bridge.
  • Building a new median strip on Railway Avenue that prevents right-in, right-out movements for the traffic travelling to and from Karuah Street.
  • Sealing Longworth Lane to provide improved access between Karuah Street and Glenroy Street. This will allow residents of Karuah Street to access Glenroy Street, Railway Avenue, or obtain through access to Haussman Drive.
  • Relocating the entrance and extension of the existing access track located south of the bridge and east of Thornton Road.  This includes an extension to the existing culvert under Thornton Road near Huntingdale Drive.

Works planned for the next April/May 2012

  • Installing bridge girders.
  • Pouring concrete bridge decks.
  • Pavement works north of bridge on Railway Avenue.
  • Pavement works south of bridge adjacent to Thornton Road.

Salvage works onsite has been completed in accordance with Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit.
