Intersection safety improvements - Weston
Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) has completed safety improvements at Weston.
The projects were funded by the Federal Government under the Federal Nation Building Program as a National Blackspot project.
Background
In the five years between 2003 and 2007 there were 11 crashes at the First and Station streets intersection, with eight of the 11 crashes resulting in injury. All of the 11 crashes were cross traffic or turning vehicle crashes.
In the same time period, there were eight crashes near the First Street and Government Road and Cessnock Road intersection, six of which resulted in injuries.
In response to community feedback, Roads and Maritime Services revised its earlier plans for a median on First Street across the Government Road intersection following community feedback.
Features
- The work involved banning only selected turns which will improve safety by both restricting turns and simplifying the judgment required by motorists for the remaining movements.
- The right turn into Cessnock Road from First Street and the right turn and through movements out of Cessnock Road, onto and across First Street, are now banned.
- The work included small concrete islands on both Cessnock Road and Government Road to reinforce the restricted movements out of Cessnock Road, and to mount a Stop sign in the middle of Government Road.
- The islands are placed to allow over-dimension loads escorted by pilot vehicles to cross First Street from both directions under traffic control.
- The improvements also provided a short right turn bay for vehicles turning right from Northcote Street onto Government Road.
This safety project followed on from the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of First Street and Station Street and has further improved safety in Weston.
