Morpeth Bridge
Morpeth Bridge spans the Hunter River at Morpeth near Maitland. It is a timber bridge constructed in 1898 and has an overall length of 281 metres. Morpeth Bridge is maintained by Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) and is of significant heritage importance.
Roads and Maritime Services is currently undertaking essential works to strengthen the approach spans of the bridge. These works will minimise future routine maintenance.
Overview of the strengthening works
In August 2010 Roads and Maritime Services completed works to upgrade the approach spans on Morpeth Bridge. Recent works have involved replacing the timber deck across the three timber truss spans. This work has provided a smoother driving experience across the full length of the bridge and will help to reduce the amount of routine maintenance on the bridge.
During May 2011, all of the bolts in the new deck will be re-tightened. A seal will be also placed across the deck. During June, a final coat of paint will be applied to the bridge railing and kerbs along the bridge.
The Morpeth Bridge deck replacement work is expected to be completed by the end of June, weather permitting. The work is expected to be completed some four months earlier than planned.
Bridge and lane closures
The bridge has been reduced to one lane until the end of June 2011 to complete the essential works above.
Part day closures of the bridge are required and are planned to operate outside morning and afternoon traffic peak hours. Roads and Maritime Services apologises for any inconvenience.
Detours around the bridge will be in place during closures. Motorists can travel via East Maitland using the new Harry Boyle Bridge across the Hunter River or via Raymond Terrace using Seaham Road.
