Safety improvements - Mayfield

Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) has completed safety improvements at the intersection of Maitland Road and Baker and Barton streets, Mayfield, in response to the crash history at this location.

This project was funded by the Federal Government under the Federal Nation Building Program as a National Blackspot Project.

Background

In the five year period from January 2003 to December 2008, there were nine crashes within 50 metres of the intersection of Maitland Road and Baker and Barton streets, Mayfield.

The majority of crashes at the intersection relate to vehicles turning right out of the side streets. Four of the nine crashes resulted in injury.

Improvements include:

  • Installation of a concrete traffic island on Baker Street, at the intersection of
    Maitland Road and Baker Street.
  • Installation of a concrete island on Barton Street, at the intersection of Maitland Road and Baker Street.
  • Restriction of the right hand turn movements out of Baker and Barton streets, and movements across Maitland Road.

The proposal also included line marking and providing additional signage to alert motorists to the changed traffic movements.

Work was completed in March 2010.
