Intersection improvements at Tomago
Improvements at the intersections of the Pacific Highway and Tomago Road and the Pacific Highway and Old Punt Road, Tomago.
Background
Approximately 40,000 vehicles travel through the Pacific Highway and Tomago Road intersection each day.
Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) has installed traffic signals at the two intersection to improve safety for road users.
Key features of the proposal
Tomago Road and the Pacific Highway:
- Traffic control signals with provision for pedestrians.
- A paved area for cyclists.
- Two right-turn lanes on the Pacific Highway for traffic turning into Tomago Road.
- Two left turn lanes on Tomago Road for traffic turning onto Pacific Highway.
- Widening Tomago Road to two lanes eastbound, near the highway.
- Relocating bus stop facilities to north of Tomago Road.
- Removing the right turn exit from Tomago Road to the highway.
- Providing improved drainage on the Pacific Highway and Tomago Road.
Old Punt Road and the Pacific Highway:
- Traffic control signals.
- An improved left-turn lane from Old Punt Road to the Pacific Highway.
- A paved area and crossing point for cyclists.
Benefits of the proposal
- Improved access to Tomago industrial area and Newcastle airport.
- Improved safety for vehicles/cyclists accessing the Pacific Highway.
- Improved access for pedestrians and bus commuters on the Pacific Highway.
Traffic signals at the Tomago Road intersection were commissioned on 17 December 2007. Traffic signals at the Old Punt Road intersection were commissioned on 5 June 2007.
