penrith road improvements

The NSW Government committed to three projects in the Penrith area, west of Sydney, to improve road safety for motorists and pedestrians, and improve overall traffic efficiency on the road network.

Road improvements are being made at three locations

  • Mulgoa Road, School House Road and Spencer Street intersection, Glenmore Park and Regentville.
  • The Northern Road and M4 Motorway interchange upgrade, South Penrith.
  • Mulgoa Road – Jamison Road intersection upgrade, Jamisontown.

Mulgoa Road, School House Road and Spencer Street intersection, Glenmore Park and Regentville.

The NSW Government committed $3 million to improve travel times and ease congestion for Glenmore Park residents and motorists accessing Mulgoa Road which will also enhance driver and pedestrian safety.

The initial plan to replace the Glenmore Parkway and Mulgoa Road roundabout with traffic lights was not favoured by the community. An alternative solution, to instead improve the nearby intersection of Mulgoa Road, School House Road and Spencer Street, was supported by the community during recent consultation.

In May 2009, Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) released its proposed intersection upgrade which provides right turn bays on Mulgoa Road at School House Road and Spencer Street.

Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) commenced construction in April 2010. The upgrade was completed in March 2011.

The Northern Road – M4 Motorway interchange upgrade

The NSW Government committed $5.5 million to upgrade The Northern Road and M4 interchange.

Construction to upgrade the intersection commenced on 16 September 2009 and was completed in June 2010.

The work included extending the existing north and south bound right turn bays to improve the movement of traffic along The Northern Road through the interchange and from The Northern Road onto the M4 Motorway.

It also involved modifying the existing traffic lights to control the left slip lanes heading east from and onto the M4 Motorway.

Mulgoa Road – Jamison Road intersection upgrade

In February 2007 the NSW Government announced a commitment to install traffic signals at the intersection of Mulgoa Road and Jamison Road, Jamisontown. This commitment follows community support and petitioning for this intersection to be upgraded for safety reasons.

The $15 million project involves the removal of the roundabout and installation of traffic lights at the intersection.

The upgrade will enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians by replacing the roundabout with traffic lights, which will include pedestrian crossing facilities.

Utility relocation commenced in August 2009 and the project completed in January 2011.

Mamre Road – turning restrictions

Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) is working to improve road safety and traffic congestion on Mamre Road, between the Great Western Highway and the M4 motorway, St Marys.

To reduce the crash risk and subsequently improve road safety and traffic flow in 2010, Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) restricted the turning movements to and from Mamre Road and subsequently reduce queuing at Putland Street, Swanston Street and Wilson Street.

Richmond Road at Star Court and Boomerang Place, Cambridge Gardens

To reduce the crash risk and subsequently improve road safety and traffic flow on Richmond Road in the vicinity of Boomerang Place and Star Court, Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) is proposing to:

  • Restrict conflicting turning movements at the intersection of Richmond Road and Star Court by closing the existing concrete median on Richmond Road.
  • Control pedestrian and vehicle movements at the intersection of Richmond Road and Boomerang Place by installing traffic lights.
