The four lane Bangor Bypass Stage 2 project opened to traffic - April 2011.

The project

Menai Road is an important thoroughfare for southern Sydney, serving as an east-west route between the Princes Highway at Sutherland and Alfords Point Road at Menai. It also forms part of a cross-regional link between the key residential and employment centres of Sutherland and Bankstown. Similarly, Old Illawarra Road is a key north-south route, providing access between Heathcote and Alfords Point roads.

In recognition of the issues associated with current and future traffic congestion on Menai Road and Old Illawarra Road, the NSW Government has, in consultation with the local community, proposed the Bangor Bypass. The project has significantly enhanced the efficiency and safety of road based travel in southern Sydney as well as offering valuable opportunities for improvements to the local urban environment.

The Bangor Bypass proposal supports initiatives outlined in Action for Transport 2010 relating to the development of the road network between southern Sydney and Bankstown and a cross-regional bus route between Miranda and Bankstown.

Features

  • A four lane divided road between Bangor Bypass and Recreation Drive.
  • Removal of direct vehicular access between Ella Avenue and Old Illawarra Road/Australia Road.
  • Traffic signals at the new T-intersection of Ella Avenue and New Illawarra Road.
  • Traffic signals at the intersection of Old and New Illawarra roads to replace the existing roundabout. These signals will control and regulate traffic from all directions and provide for safe pedestrian and cyclist movements.
  • A shared use pedestrian/cyclist path along Old Illawarra Road between Barden Road and Recreation Drive.
  • Realignment of the Old and New Illawarra roads intersection toward the east to avoid the perimeter of the old tip site, minimise potential disturbance to the existing creek and avoid land allocated for a proposed golf course.
  • The connection from New Illawarra Road to Marsden Road has been removed and the area landscaped.

Benefits

  • Removal of through traffic from Old Illawarra Road.
  • Reduced travel time for through traffic.
  • Improved road safety for all road users.
  • Improved facilities and access for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Reduced number of heavy vehicles using Old Illawarra Road, with noise benefits for nearby residents.
