About road projects in Sydney region

Road and bus transport projects for Sydney region are divided into six sub-regions:

  • Northern Sydney
  • Outer West and Blue Mountains
  • South West Sydney
  • Southern Sydney
  • Western Sydney

As Sydney grows – existing and future transport demands are a significant challenge to Sydney and NSW. 

A well planned and integrated transport solution that keeps up with population and employment growth will ensure Sydney's economic productivity and competiveness is maintained and enhanced.

Sydney Region manages:

  • 2,811 carriageway kilometres of state roads and national highway.
  • Administers funding for maintenance and rehabilitation of 1,155 carriageway kilometres of Sydney roads carried out by councils.
  • 792 bridge and bridge sized culverts.

Key challenges for Sydney

The key challenges in managing the road network include:

  • Managing traffic – a complex task that requires technological expertise, careful planning and the coordinated effort of engineers, planners and other staff.
  • Managing the road network, to ensure the respective needs of motorists, public transport, freight, commuters and pedestrians are balanced.
  • Designing and constructing new roads and bridges and maintaining and enhancing road transport infrastructure.

Sydney Regional Manager

Sydney Regional ManagerPeter Crosby commenced at the then Department of Main Roads (later became Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority)) as an Engineering Cadet at the University of NSW. He has worked at Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) for 39 years, and has been the Sydney Regional Manager since 2009. Peter considers himself fortunate to have worked in a large variety of fields with a broad cross section of people and skills. These projects include the Halfway Creek Deviation, Narellan Road upgrading, the Hazelbrook upgrade and work on the Pacific Highway. He has been responsible for maintenance, construction, network and business planning, road safety, traffic management, intelligent transport systems and contract management.
