Old Windsor Road/Norwest Boulevarde intersection

Old Windsor Road/Norwest Boulevarde intersection upgrade, Bella Vista

The current Old Windsor Road/Norwest Boulevarde intersection has been upgraded by relocating the through lanes of Old Windsor Road so that they pass beneath Norwest Boulevarde at Bella Vista.

The existing northbound lanes of Old Windsor Road have been retained for northbound traffic turning into Norwest Boulevarde. A new ramp has been built to allow southbound traffic on Old Windsor Road to turn into Norwest Boulevard.

Background

The construction of the Westlink M7, along with residential and commercial growth in the area, resulted in the need to upgrade this intersection at Bella Vista. Construction on the intersection commenced in March 2005. The underpass was opened to traffic in September 2006 and the intersection upgrade was completed in December 2006.

As part of the Westlink M7 project, Norwest Boulevarde has been extended from Old Windsor Road to the Westlink M7. Meurants Lane has been closed at Old Windsor Road. The Westlink M7 has ramps connecting to Old Windsor Road via the extension of Norwest Boulevarde. These ramps allow eastbound motorists to exit the Westlink M7 to access Old Windsor Road, Norwest Boulevarde and Greenhill Drive and allow westbound motorists to access the Westlink M7.

Benefits of the project

The upgrade of the Old Windsor Road/Norwest Boulevarde intersection has major benefits for road users. Safety along Old Windsor Road has been improved and traffic congestion reduced.

The underpass reduces travel times for motorists and freight operators in the north-west sector travelling to other areas in Sydney.

Pedestrians and cyclists benefit from a three-metre-wide shared pedestrian cyclist path on the eastern side of Old Windsor Road. This path now connects to the 40km shared path on the Westlink M7.
