Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) is reviewing its plans to realign the Newell Highway at Grong Grong in response to community concerns.

After receiving feedback from the community and stakeholders in May and June 2011 on four options displayed for comment, Roads and Maritime Services has decided to reassess the project's scope and objectives.

The local community raised significant concerns in response to plans to realign the Newell Highway at Grong Grong to remove a sharp bend on the highway through the village.

These concerns included social and economic impacts on the community and access to and from the town.

As a result, Roads and Maritime Services has decided that further community consultation will take place once the project brief has been confirmed.

Roads and Maritime Services understands this may cause uncertainty within the community of Grong Grong, however it is essential that all feedback is considered.

No decisions on the project will be made until the community has had another chance to comment.

Roads and Maritime Services will continue to keep the public informed during this planning process.
