The new Murray River crossing at Euston - Robinvale opened to traffic in October 2006.  This new crossing forms an important strategic link between Victoria and NSW assisting the movement of local and through traffic, and freight, particularly produce from the expanding horticultural and agricultural production in the area.

The existing crossing has been dismantled and the lift span of the main bridge relocated to McGinty Park in Robinvale as part of a historic display.

The towns of Euston and Robinvale are located approximately 800 km to the south west of Sydney, 420 km north west of Melbourne and about 80 km to the south east of Mildura.

This $51 million project was funded by the Federal ($17 million from the Federation Fund), New South Wales and Victorian governments.

Project overview

The new crossing links the Sturt Highway near Euston in NSW and Robinvale in Victoria. It provides a two-lane, flood-free crossing of the Murray River and floodplain. There are also improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. The project will also enhance the safe movement of river craft along the Murray River.

Main features of the new crossing include:

• New 671 metre Main Bridge over the Murray River and part of the flood plain. This bridge incorporates a separate pathway for pedestrians and cyclists.
• New 300 metre approach road and embankment in Robinvale, linking to the Murray Valley Highway with intersection connections to Moore Street and River Road.
• New 151 metre Approach Bridge No 1 over part of the flood plain.
• New 181 metre Approach Bridge No 2 over part of the flood plain.
• New approach roads in NSW connecting to the Murray Valley Highway near the Sturt Highway.
• Landscaping along the roadway corridor.

Background

Investigations for upgrading the crossing commenced in 1999 with a community based Value Management Study, which identified six options for a new crossing. These options were then examined in detail in a Route Selection Study in 2000. This assessment identified a preferred route option adjacent to, and downstream of, the existing Murray River Bridge.

An environmental assessment was carried out on the preferred option. This assessment resulted in approval for the project to proceed with measures in place to mitigate environmental impacts.

In May 2004 a $42.2 million contract was awarded to Baulderstone Hornibrook Pty Ltd to design and construct the new Murray River crossing between Euston and Robinvale. 

Construction work commenced onsite in September 2004 for a two year period.  Close attention to safety and environmental matters were maintained throughout the construction period.  Monthly community meetings were well attended during the construction period.
