Barton Highway future duplication

Final road boundaries and concept design

The Australian Government is funding planning for the future duplication of the existing single carriageway sections of the Barton Highway between the ACT border and the dual carriageways north of Murrumbateman.

Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) is managing this planning process for future duplication of 33 kilometres of the Barton highway, including an eastern bypass of Murrumbateman.

In 2008 a 200 metre wide corridor was identified along which various studies and investigations would occur.

In 2009 Aurecon Australia Pty Ltd was engaged to carry out a preliminary environmental investigation of the corridor.

In 2010 the proposed road boundaries and concept design were placed on public display for comment.
Roads and Maritime Services has now finalised the road boundaries and concept design for the future duplication of the Barton Highway.

Finalising the road boundaries will help landowners identify potential impacts to their properties and provide Yass Valley Council with a road corridor for future land use planning.

The road boundaries and concept design are now available for your information.

Community feedback

Proposed road boundaries and concept design for the future duplication of the Barton Highway were placed on public display for comment in May and June 2010.

Feedback from the Murrumbateman and Yass communities is summarised in the submissions report which is available for your reference. This feedback was used to refine the road boundaries and concept design.

An information display to show the final road boundaries and concept design was held in Murrumbateman in December 2011.

What happens next?

The road boundaries have been provided to Yass Valley Council for inclusion in council's Local Environmental Plan. This will assist in controlling future development along the Barton Highway and to ensure the road corridor boundaries are protected.

Current funding for the Barton Highway is for duplication planning and safety works only. The timing for commencement of duplication works has not yet been decided.

The community and other stakeholders will be given another opportunity to comment on the proposed duplication of the Barton Highway during the detailed design and environmental assessment stages of the project which would occur closer to the time of construction.

Changes may be made to the concept design during the detailed design and environmental assessment due to changes in road safety design standards and future land use and development along the project corridor. We would minimise any changes to the road boundaries where possible.
