Slope stability work and installation of signage on the Snowy Mountains Highway at Brown Mountain

Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) is undertaking slope stability work on the Snowy Mountains Highway on the 10 kilometre climb up Brown Mountain between Bemboka and Nimmitabel, approximately half way between Bega and Cooma.

This work involves removing loose rocks off the cliff face and upgrading culverts to improve drainage and forms part of RMS' ongoing annual program of work targeting slope stability and drainage improvements.

The Snowy Mountains Highway at Brown Mountain is susceptible to unforseen closures due to landslides and rockfalls. RMS is proactively addressing issues and locations where work can be undertaken to mitigate these risks to slope stability and minimise disruption to motorists.

Work to install new curve warning signs will also be carried out at this time to minimise future traffic impacts.

It is expected work will be finished on Friday 28 June 2013, weather permitting.

What is the impact to motorists?

To ensure the safety of motorists and workers, one lane on the Snowy Mountains Highway, in the vicinity of the work, is closed to traffic.

It is expected there will be two, 10 minute road closures to traffic in both directions while work is undertaken until 28 June 2013.

Traffic control will be on site to guide motorists past the worksite.

Work will be carried out Monday to Fridays between 7am and 6pm.

Motorists are advised to expect minor delays and follow all temporary sign posting and traffic control measures.
