Queanbeyan to Batemans Bay Corridor Strategy - 2009

Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) has prepared a corridor strategy for the area from Queanbeyan to Batemans Bay. This strategy identifies short term and longer term priorities for the Kings Highway, which is the key route within this corridor. These priorities are based on a process of identifying the existing deficiencies in the road network and identifying likely future changes in the corridor that would also impact the performance of the network.

Background

All organisations that are responsible for large and complex infrastructure systems are challenged by how to best manage and enhance these systems to maximise the benefits for the community. Networks include road, rail, water, air, sea and telecommunications systems at a national, state and local levels.

A way of working through this complexity is to undertake network and corridor planning to:

  • Identify existing and anticipated performance issues.
  • Determine relative work priorities.
  • Develop appropriate strategies to address these over the longer term.

Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority)'s Network and Corridor Planning Practice Notes (2008) improve Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority)'s planning efforts to coordinate works to deliver benefits to the community. Recognising the need to prioritise how we invest in the road network, corridor strategies help guide Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority)'s future investment decisions.

Queanbeyan to Batemans Bay Corridor

The Queanbeyan to Batemans Bay Corridor, serviced by the Kings Highway, is 137km in length. The strategy recognises the importance of the Kings Highway within the corridor as the primary route linking the national capital Canberra and the commuter suburb of Queanbeyan at the western end to farming areas and heritage towns such as Bungendore and Braidwood in the middle to Batemans Bay in the South Coast.

The Kings Highway serves a population of approximately 380,000 people, with the majority located in Queanbeyan and Canberra, and a range of employment industries including government, property and business services, tourism, defence, health and community services, forestry, grazing and dry land farming.
