Picton Road Safety Improvements

Safety program

Picton Road The $43 million program of safety improvements on Picton Road is progressing well.

The program is designed to reduce the number and severity of the most common types of crashes on the road and is expected to be completed by mid 2013.

The program of works is jointly funded by the NSW and Australian governments.

So far, Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) has invested $40.5 million in planning, surveying and ongoing construction work. This includes work which has been completed, is being built or for which detailed planning has been finalised.

Additional works are being identified for the the remaining $2.5 million.

Lowering the speed limit on Picton Road

On Monday 1 November 2010 the speed limit on Picton Road between Mount Ousley Road and the Hume Highway was reduced from 100km/h to 90km/h.

Speed limits in NSW are determined by a number of factors including the surrounding conditions, road alignment, road usage, adjacent developments, vehicle types and volumes, crash history and the number of access points along the route.

The speed limit will be reviewed after completion of the safety works.

Please note that road work speed limits will be enforced in signposted areas around work sites on Picton Road.

Background

Picton Road has had a number of crashes in recent years involving both light and heavy vehicles. For more crash history information, go to Picton Road crash history page.

This $43 million program of works is jointly funded by the NSW and Australian governments.

These funds include $4.3 million from the Federal Government's Nation Building program.

The NSW Government has secured the remaining $38.7 million required to complete the Picton Road upgrade by June 2013.

This financial year, the NSW Government has allocated more than $12 million to accelerate the upgrade of Picton Road. This was part of a pre-election commitment to improve road safety.

Construction started in early 2009 and is scheduled to be completed by mid 2013, weather permitting.
