Proposed safety improvements at Otford
Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) will not be proceeding with the proposed improvements to the parking layout at Bulgo Lookout at Otford. This follows extensive consultation with the community, Wollongong City Council and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services, and after further technical and safety investigations were carried out.
These safety investigations found no clear crash patterns of which this treatment would directly address and concluded that the proposed treatment was no longer feasible.
The car park is owned by Wollongong City Council and RMS has communicated this decision with council. Wollongong City Council will continue to maintain the Bulgo lookout car park and RMS will continue to monitor the safety along Lady Wakehurst Drive.
Background
In 2010 RMS proposed improvements to the parking layout at Bulgo Lookout at Otford. RMS analysis was based on two incidents including a crash in July 2010 and a fatality in 2007.
RMS consulted with the community throughout 2010 and 2011.
Community feedback included:
- Concerns about the proposed car park changes, particularly the proposed reduction in spaces.
- A range of safety concerns including sight distance and the possibility of cars parking in less safe areas.
- Other issues including concerns about speeding and pedestrian amenity.

As part of this feedback process RMS committed to undertake further technical and safety investigations regarding the proposed treatment.
