Overview of the restoration project

Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) started major restoration works on Hampden Bridge in May 2011 to ensure the bridge's functionality and heritage values are retained into the future. The restoration work included:

• Replacing the entire timber deck of the bridge.
• Reinforcing the abutments on both sides of the bridge.
• Refurbishing the four bridge bearings.

The timing of the works was finalised following extensive consultation with the Kangaroo Valley community.

The major restoration work was undertaken in two seven week blocks of time. Hampden Bridge remained open for the majority these works with closures limited to midweek evenings only.

The first block of work started on Monday 9 May and ran until Friday 1 July 2011.

The second block of work started on Monday 25 July and will run until Tuesday 13 September 2011.
Works were carried out from Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm, with work continuing into the night on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until 1am.

There was no vehicular access across Hampden Bridge between 6pm and midnight on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; however pedestrian access was available.

A community transport service was introduced during these works to ensure community access into and out of Kangaroo Valley.

Maintenance finishing works, including painting the bridge, continued into November.
