Both directions of the $110 million Northern Distributor extension have been opened to traffic. Thousands of Illawarrra residents took part in a community walk on Sunday 29 November 2009, along the Northern Distributor extension, from Molloy Street, Bulli to Park Road, Woonona, to celebrate the opening of the southbound carriageway of the project.
The southbound carriageway was opened to traffic at the conclusion of the event.
Project benefits
The new four lane divided road provides improved travel times and access to the northern suburbs of Wollongong. It also reduces congestion on local roads.
Cyclists are able to use the new 2.5 metre sealed shoulders where they can enjoy a smooth and safe ride.
The 3km extension also includes an overpass at Campbell Street, underpass at Park Road and new traffic signals to provide access to York Road near Alice Street.
There is also improved safety and access around the Woonona Shopping Centre with less through traffic in the area.
