Strengthening
The Sydney Harbour Bridge has recently undergone an $85 million improvement and upgrade to extend its lifespan indefinitely.
This project was funded by the NSW Government, with the works designed to:
- Safely upgrade one of the world's great steel bridges.
- Ensure there were no significant changes to the visual identity of the bridge.
- Minimise disruption to motorists and commuters.
Temporary work platforms, painted in the Harbour Bridge's 'bridge grey', were constructed along the length of the bridge to provide unique construction access. This custom built equipment will now be stored for re-use whenever required. These structures for now will be disassembled.
Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) constructed a new plaza under the bridge to improve Bradfield Park. An area that was essentially dirt with poor drainage has been transformed with a lowered plaza area, landscaping and seating. New fencing was installed to ensure cyclists and pedestrians could not access the railway tracks or the roadway.
The upgrade work was completed in 2010. We thank residents for their patience during this construction period.
