Sydney Harbour Bridge precinct

Construction activities

The waterproofing and resurfacing of the Sydney Harbour Bridge will involve a number of construction activities. The timeframes below are indicative and may change due to weather.

Pre-construction activity

  • Clearway signs will be installed along alternative routes.

Closing the bridge and limiting public access (from 10pm Friday)

  • Traffic diversions and construction site access points will be established.
  • Areas of Dawes Point Park and Bradfield Park will be closed while work is undertaken overhead.
  • Traffic, cyclist and pedestrian access via Hickson Road, George Street and Cumberland Street, The Rocks; and Olympic Drive Kirribilli under the Sydney Harbour Bridge will be closed during the work.
  • Boating safety officers will manage vessels on Sydney Harbour underneath the bridge.

Remove existing asphalt pavement (11pm – midday Saturday)

  • The asphalt surface will be ground off as close to the edges and joints as possible with profilers. The remaining asphalt along the edges will be removed using jack hammers.
  • Asphalt will be loaded into trucks and taken off-site to a recycling facility.

Concrete slab preparation (early Saturday morning to midday)

  • The exposed concrete bridge deck will be cleaned using bobcat sweepers and vacuum trucks with self-contained high pressure water units.
  • The concrete slab will be dried using vehicle mounted infra-red heaters.

Waterproofing the approach spans (early Saturday morning to early Sunday morning)

  • A three layer polyurethane waterproofing system will be applied to the concrete deck of the north and south approach spans. The first primer layer will be applied using a power roller. The polyurethane waterproofing layer and the final primer layer will be applied by manual spraying. There will be some odour from the waterproofing.

Waterproofing the arch span (Saturday)

  • A heated crumbed rubber bitumen will be sprayed onto the concrete deck of the arch span to provide a waterproofing seal.
  • Aggregate is then spread over and rolled into the spray seal.
  • Excess aggregate is swept up and removed off site.

Paving the asphalt and pavement marking (Saturday-Monday)

  • One layer of asphaltic concrete would be laid to between about 40 and 70 millimetres thick.
  • Lane lines will be marked with water based paint.
  • Lane lines will then be re-marked using longer lasting thermoplastic materials, typically within six months of the asphalt paving work.

Site clean-up (Sunday-Monday)

  • The site area will be thoroughly cleaned before reopening.

Open to general traffic (by 5am Monday)

  • Traffic diversions will be removed and all lanes of the bridge opened to general traffic.
