Princes Highway upgrade

Princes Highway at Kiama bends

Kiama bends

In response to concerns from the local community about road safety on the Kiama bends, Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) has attended two meetings for the South Precinct of Kiama Council on 21 July 2011 and 18 August 2011.

At the meeting on 21 July 2011, Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) responded to specific concerns raised by the community. The concerns raised included:

  • Reducing the speed limit to 70km/h.
  • Moving the current southbound merge point northwards to a point near the truck rest area.
  • Installing two mobile speed-detecting variable message signs.
  • Extending the southern end of the existing jersey barrier with a cable barrier.
  • Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) immediately starts planning an overall upgrade to the Kiama bends as a permanent solution.

Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) listened to the community's concerns and committed to investigate them further and return their findings at a meeting on 18 August 2011.  This included:

  • Information on speed limits and advisory speed signposting.
  • Signs in place on Kiama bends at the merge point.
  • Rules for merging.
  • Safe Sight Distance (SSD) and Merge Sight Distance (MSD) when merging at 80 km/h and 70km/h.

An option to extend the existing concrete median barrier and improve the road shoulder was discussed. The community felt this high cost option was not viable due to the impending work as part of the Gerringong upgrade.

Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) will investigate signage near Mt Pleasant Lookout as well as the electronic sign at the truck rest area to see if improvements can be made.

The presentations Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) made at both meetings are available below.
