Princes Highway upgrade

New heavy vehicle rest areas on the Princes Highway

The NSW and Australian governments are joint funding $8.7 million to construct five new heavy vehicle rest areas on the Princes Highway between Sussex Inlet and the Victorian border.

This will ensure compliance with the National Transport Commission (NTC) fatigue management guidelines and improve stopping opportunities for the heavy vehicle operators.

NEW Heavy vehicle REST AREA LOCATIONS

New heavy vehicle rest areas will be constructed on the Princes Highway, three southbound and two northbound.
Southbound rest areas:

  • Jerrawangala, 2 kilometres south of Sussex Inlet Road - under construction.
  • Malabar Creek, 3 kilometres north of Moruya - in planning.
  • Near Christopher's Road, 32 kilometres north of Bega - in planning.

Northbound rest areas:

  • Near Dummetts Lane, 28 kilometres north of Bega - under construction.
  • Near Broulee Road, 7 kilometres south of Mogo - under construction.

WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW?

Work is almost complete on the first heavy vehicle rest area site at Jerrawangala, south of Sussex Inlet Road. The only work remaining at this site is the installation of permanent toilets. Portaloos are currently in use. It is expected the permanent toilets will be installed in March 2012 (weather permitting).

Construction commenced on the second site near Dummetts Lane, north of Bega in June 2011. It is expected this site will be completed in March 2012 (weather permitting).

Construction is also well underway at the third site near Broulee Road. This work started in October 2011 and should be finished by the end of April 2012 (weather permitting).

Planning is underway for the site at Malabar Creek.

Roads and Maritime Services held an information meeting on 28 February 2012 to further discuss the heavy vehicle rest area site at Christopher's Road. For more information, see the above "latest news"

Community information meeting

Roads and Maritime Services held an information meeting on Tuesday 28 February 2012 to discuss the heavy vehicle rest area that will be built at Christopher's Road, Quaama.

The meeting was held following concerns raised by community members in 2011 about the heavy vehicle rest area at Christopher's Road. A Review of Options Report has been prepared and is now available for you to view. Click here to read the report.
